Outdoor Lighting Techniques

Several lighting techniques can be utilized to achieve special effects in the landscape at night:

Down lighting or “moon lighting” is oriented from above to imitate the natural light created by the sun or moon. It may be used as safety lighting for pathways, driveways, and stairs. Down lighting also is effective to light decks and to accent plant material.

Up lighting adds depth to trees, landscapes, and home features by lighting from below, creating a rather dramatic effect. By placing lights at an angle, the textures of fences or walls can be accented.

Back lighting silhouettes an object of interest, such as a tree or shrub, against a lit surface. This indirect lighting effect is achieved by angling the light against a wall or fence behind the object.

Discussing your requirements with us early in your project allows you to gain professional input during the formulation of the program, avoiding costly errors later on. Our extensive knowledge of lighting products and systems enables us to integrate lighting into your space effectively. The designer can frequently reduce the cost of the project because they are able to:

Meet the Programmed budget

Evaluate alternative lighting systems

Locate lights only where needed
